How are birthdays celebrated in the classroom?

A student may bring treats to share with the class on their birthday. There should be enough snacks for each child in the class. The snacks must be pre-packaged.

Are students allowed to have water bottles on their desks?

Yes, I allow students to have a water bottle on their desk throughout the year. The water bottle should be some type of sealed container, not a bottle with a screw on lid. They may only have water in their containers.

Are students allowed to bring in snacks?

Yes, I do allow the students to eat a healthy snack every day at about 10:00 a.m. Some suggestions include: fruits, vegetables, crackers, cheese, dry cereal, yogart cups, popcorn, nuts, etc.

Do students need an extra pair of gym shoes for school?

Yes, students must keep a clean pair of gym shoes at school at all times. They wear the gym shoes to indoor gym class and indoor lunch recess. Shoes should not have black soles.

Will the students receive monthly book order forms?

Yes, once a month I will send home book order forms from Scholastic. There will be a due date on the back of the form. If you wish to take advantage of these discounted books, your child will need to return the order form and payment by the given due date. You may pay by cash or check. Please make checks payable to Scholastic Book Club.  You may also order books on-line. Go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs and DVDQH is the activation code for our class.  If you would like to order books as gifts for your child for a special occasion such as birthdays or other holidays, you can call me, e-mail me, or send your order in a sealed envelope addressed to me. When the books come in, I will contact you and we can arrange for you to pick up the books.

Is there a reading incentive program in second grade?

Yes, we use the Book-It! reading incentive program. The program runs from October-March. At the beginning of each month, students will receive a yellow reading log. They will write down all of the time they spend reading on their log. Parents must initial the reading log each time the student reads. The student must return the signed calendar within 5 days after the first of the month. If they have met their reading goal for the month, they will receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. At the end of the program, I will provide a pizza party for the students who have participated at least 5 out of the 6 month.
