He and Jacob essentially tied with a score of 346. Top 4 divers advanced to the regional and all 4 eventually qualified for state. Our young girls' diving team stepped it up this year. All 3 girls qualified for the sectional final! That may be the first time in school history. The girls pushed past fear all season and learned some very difficult dives. Looking forward to what this team can bring in 2017-2018!

Welcome to Hobart Diving!
We need a great diving team to support our hard working swim team. If we don't have divers, the swim team gives up points to the other team each meet!
Plus, diving is awesome!!

Want to be a diver?
Let's be honest, you need at least some kind of athletic ability to start diving in high school, but if you do, you CAN do it. I know and met Olympic divers that didn't start until they were 15 and one that didn't begin until college (and he won the Olympics!).
Being on the diving team is something special. It is a memory from high school that I will never forget and I hope you won't either. It's a small team and we support each other in many ways during the season. We travel together on our little mini bus and have great times. We are part of the swim team, but you do quickly find out that we are very different. Diving is unique. You will love it.
New to diving? Previous diver, cheerleader, gymnast or athlete?
Most Hobart divers have never done any diving before, so it's ok. You do need to have athletic ability to compete in diving. It is just not safe otherwise. You can be assured that I will be coaching you using skill progression. I will emphasize diving safety and teach you how to execute dives properly. Good skill progression is essential. Gymnasts and cheerleaders that come to diving come with an advantage of flexibility and knowing how to flip and maybe even how to twist!
Why diving?
Diving is a great combination of skills that are needed for everyday life! Obviously, you get the benefit of becoming stronger and more fit. You will also be able to impress people at pool parties :) But, most important, you learn: goal setting, backward planning, how to deal with disappointment, how to confront fear/nerves, ways to celebrate your success and how to handle delayed gratification. Other skills you will develop include: great math skills, creating routines and procedures, motivation techniques and having fun while staying focused.
What are the practices like? I am working on creating a lot of dryland drills and workouts that we will add to our practice. We will practice everyday at the HMS pool from 3-4:30/5 (depends on the day). Divers will also attend morning workouts with the swimmers. We will follow a similar routine each day, but different skills will be our focus. The more we learn the routine and practice the dives, the better you will be in competition. We do try to have a lot of fun and I try to focus practice based on the goals of each diver. Come ready with goals. My current divers will tell you that I will annoy you until you give me goals and if you don't I make them for you and you might not like them! Divers can swim as well, but be willing to stay at practice until 5:30 so you can get some swim practice in.
Here is a beginning idea of what the first practices will be like. (Veteran divers will have a different will progression). We will take it slow, but we have a lot to learn before the first meet. It is essential to attend EVERY practice so we can become extra awesome!
Week 1
Basics of diving, how diving is scored, elements of a dive, approach, hurdle, forward jump, forward dives (tuck, pike, 1 ss (tuck, pike), 1 1/2ss(tuck, pike) Back dives (tuck, pike, 1 ss*, 1 1/2 ss*), proper entry
Week 2
Approach, hurdle, forward dives, back dives, Inward dive (tuck only), reverse dive (tuck, pike, 1 ss)
Week 3
Approach, Hurdle, forward dives, back dives, inward dives (tuck, pike, 1 ss*, 1 1/2 ss*) reverse (tuck, pike, 1 ss), twist (forward dive with 1/2 twist, back 1 ss 1/2 twist)
First meet-girls
Must have 6 dive requirement!
There are many many dive options. This year, I will focus on certain dives. However, if a diver shows interest in learning a different dives from the options available, I will teach them that dive if the diver shows readiness.
Other dives we will work on this year include:
Forward 2 ss and, 2 1/2 Tuck and Pike, 3 1/2 tuck
Back 1 1/2 ss and 2 ss Tuck and Pike, 2 1/2
Inward 1 1/2 ssTuck and Pike, 2ss, 2 1/2
Reverse 1 1/2 ss, 2 ss
Twisting: back 1 1/2 with 1/2 twist, forward 1 1/2 with 1 full twist ( there are many many twisting dive options)
* These dives are more difficult and will be taught only if divers have necessary skills. We will get these dives this year!
Skill progression:
We will do our best to learn all dives in a tuck position first. This technique will help us learn the proper way to kick out so we can add higher DD dives later on!
What do I HAVE to be able to do?
Dual meets require 6 dives, one from each diving category and one optional dive. The categories include: forward, backward, inward, reverse and twist. Conference, invites and sectionals require an 11 dive list. You must have 1 basic dive from each category as well as 1 optional dive from each category and then an additional optional dive of your choice.
I will teach you! Just come committed and ready to practice and work hard each day!
