Frequently Asked Questions
What is snack time?Every day at 10:00 we have a healthy snack. An example of a healthy snack would be fruit, crackers & cheese, pretzels, or cut vegetables. Please do not send in chips. I may also ask for donations of individualized wrapped snacks to keep in the classroom for the class to share. What is the Home Reading Program? Each month I will send home a blank calendar to keep track of your child's nightly reading. Each night the children are recommended to read for 20 minutes. Please sign off for each day your child completes their reading. It is very important the children have the opportunity to practice their reading skills every night. On the last day of the month a free pizza certificate from Pizza Hut (as part of the Book It! program) is given to those children who have read each day and handed in their completed calendar. How can I order books? Each month I send home a Scholastic Book Order form. The due date is written on the back of the form. Please make checks or money orders out to Scholastic Book Club and send in an envelope labeled with your child's name and "Book Order" on the front. If you would like to purchase books for a gift or special occasion you can email me, call me, or send a note in a sealed envelope addressed to me. I will make arrangements to keep the surprise! Books are always great gifts to receive. What are Indoor Shoes used for? Each child needs a pair of gym shoes to keep at school. The gym shoes should not have black soles (the black soles mark up the gym floor.) The children change into their Indoor Shoes for Gym when they will be in the gym and for Indoor Recess. These shoes can not be worn outside.Do you celebrate birthdays? We love to sing and celebrate everyone's birthday. Children may bring in treats for the whole class. The treats must be pre-packaged. We have 21 children in our classroom. If your child has a birthday during the summer we will celebrate their 1/2 birthday at school. Are the children allowed to have water bottles?Yes! Research has shown that water is essential in keeping our brains healthy and awake! Please feel free to send in a small water bottle each day. Each afternoon the children will bring their water bottle home to be washed.Do we have homework?Yes! Each day the children will have the Math homework and Reading (20 minutes.) You should also try to practice spelling words for the test on Friday. This homework should be checked by an adult to ensure your child's understanding. It should not take more than 30 minutes to complete with minimal parent assistance. The students are simply practicing the skills they have learned in that subject area during the day.Do you teach Science, Social Studies, and Health?Yes! The students are required to master the standards in each of these subject areas. We do not give letter grades for these subjects. I teach each subject in 4 week increments. At the end of each 4 weeks the students are assessed whether they have mastered, are approaching the standard, or are below standard. You will see the mark on their report cards. How do I contact you?The best way to contact me is to write me a note or email me. If you would like to talk, please call me during the children's special time for that particular day, before school, or after school. It is difficult for me to give you sufficient time on the phone while I am teaching. What can I do to help? You are always welcome to come into our classroom to be a part of the fun we have in 2nd grade.
