    ISTEP+ Overview
    Grades 3-8
    Grade 10

The purpose of the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress Plus (ISTEP+) program is to measure student achievement in the subject areas of English/Language Arts (Grades 3-8, 10), Mathematics (Grades 3-8, 10), Science (Grades 4 and 6), and Social Studies (Grades 5 and 7). In particular, ISTEP+ reports student achievement levels according to the Indiana Academic Standards that were adopted by the Indiana State Board of Education. An Applied Skills Assessment is completed during Part 1 in February/March and a Multiple-Choice Assessment is completed during Part 2 in April/May, which are required components of the ISTEP+ program, are used to measure these standards.

After scoring is completed parents may submit a request to the school to have a student's test rescored.  Information will be sent home after each testing term.  A rescore can only be submitted to the Department of Education with a parent request.

ISTAR is a state assessment that is given to students that qualify.  The tests are alternative assessments to the ISTEP+. Typically these tests are administered during the ISTEP+ Part 2 window in the spring.

The purpose of the English Language Proficiency assessments is to determine a student's level of English proficiency. A Placement Test, administered upon a student's arrival in the United States, is used to determine which English Learner (EL) services are appropriate for the student. The annual assessment, administered in January and February, is used to determine the student's current level of English proficiency. The annual assessment is also used for accountability purposes.

ACCUPLACER, which is a computer-adaptive testing system developed by The College Board.  These exams provide both placement scores for placement into college courses and diagnostic scores that can be used to “drill down” and identify students’ strengths and specific areas of need. The results and information from the ACCUPLACER exams provide schools with a detailed assessment of students’ skills, which will assist in course selection and remediation plans for students.

    ECA
ECA Blueprints: The purpose of the test blueprints, designed with the help of Indiana classroom teachers, is to make transparent to educators the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of students on the assessments.

ECA Item Samplers: The Item Samplers on the IDOE website provide information about ECAs for students, parents, educators and others. The items in each sampler are examples of the types of items found on ECAs. These examples can serve as models when teachers are constructing items for classroom assessment. It should be noted that the samplers are not practice tests.

    IREAD-3
The purpose of the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination (IREAD-3) assessment is to measure foundational reading standards through grade three. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with House Enrolled Act 1367 (also known as Public Law 109 in 2010), which "requires the evaluation of reading skills for students who are in grade three beginning in the Spring of 2012 to ensure that all students can read proficiently before moving on to grade four."

    Curriculum:
IDOE's English/LA Toolkits and Math Toolkits should be used to refer back to the IAS standards identified by the IDOE as standards that may be assessed on the Applied Skills and Multiple Choice tests.

The standards that the students are learning and being assessed upon are the major clusters which were identified by the IDOE.

    -Assessment Blueprints
-Math and ELA Rubrics- Have students practice scoring items and their own work using the ISTEP rubrics.
-Constructed Response-  Practice - Practice - Practice!!!  Students should be aware of the 2 point rubric and use it daily in class verbally and in writing responses.  A good practice is to site two pieces of evidence on all CR items.  Have students get in the habit of including 2 pieces of evidence in all they do.
