Hands-On Ideas  (Some are messy, but very fun!)
    1.  Find the words in newspapers or magazines and highlight or cut them out...   OR... cut out letters and glue them together to make the words.
    2.  Use fingerpaint to paint the words.
    3.  Roll out play dough "snakes" and bend and twist them to make the letters in each word.
    4.  Put salt or shaving cream on a plate or table and write the words in the salt or shaving cream.
    5.  Use Twizzler Pull N Peels to spell the words, then eat them!
    6.  Spell the words with Alpha-Bits or alphabet letter noodles, then have a tasty snack!

Add a letter to am to make ham.
Change one letter to make ham into hat.
Change the vowel to make hat into hit.
Change the last letter to make hit into hip.
Add a letter to the beginning to make ship.

    Week 9: sh and th
When s and h are together, they don't make their own sounds.  Instead they work together to make the quiet sound.  We put our left index finger up to our lips and make the "sh" sound to remind us!

Word family words: this, that, thin, with, shark, shop, fish, wish
Sight words: what, when, for, are

When t and h are together, they make a new sound, too.  Put your left thumb on your chin... it's like a button that pushes your tongue between your teeth to make "th."  Th can be voiced (like the) or not voiced (thin).

    th video: http://www.starfall.com/n/skills/th/load.htm?f

    Week 10: ch
To make the ch sound, make a c with your left hand and make it "chug" across like a train.  Ch-ch-ch-ch!

Word family words: chin, chip, chick, lunch, inch, much, shell, math
Sight words: she, her, his, from

Week 11: silent e (working on long a families -ake, -ale, -ate)
When e is at the end of a word, it can jump back over one consonant and boss the vowel (a,e, i, o, or u) around.  It makes that vowel say its own name.  Bossy e is so tired after all its bossing that it is too tired to make its own sound.

Word family words: ate, gate, cake, rake, made, whale, shape, tape
Sight words: were, you, one, what

Week 12: soft c (sounds like s) and hard s (sounds like z), long i (-ide family)
When c and e are together, they make the s sound (nice).
When se is at the end of a word, they make the z sound (nose).

Long i and long o: mice, nice, hide, ride, nose, rose, drove, vote, like

    Week 13: hard s, u_e (u followed by a consonant, then bossy e), ee
Remember the rules for hard s (se sounds like z) and bossy e (jumps back over one letter to make the vowel say its name).

This week we learn that when vowel teams go a walkin' the first vowel does the talkin.'
(We talk about how the 2nd vowel is just holding the first vowel's hand and helping it... the 2nd vowel does not make a sound!)
This is a VERY important rule that will help us read and write SO many words!

Week 15: -y as long e, ai, ay
Our new rule this week is that when y is at the end of the word, it acts like a vowel.  This means instead of making the y sound (like yellow), it sounds like a long vowel.  This week we are working on y as long e like in baby.

    This week's words:

Y as long e: lady, baby, pony

Y at the end of a word serves as a long vowel, either long e or long i.  It also makes the other vowel long if there is only one consonant between them.

ai: rain, mail, pail, play, say

Remember that when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and it says its own name!

sight words: once, come, was, with

    y as a vowel video: http://www.starfall.com/n/skills/y-vowel/play.htm?f

    y as e picture hunt: http://www.starfall.com/n/picture-hunt/y-as-e/load.htm?f

    y as e story: http://www.starfall.com/n/y-as-e/y-as-e/load.htm?f

Review rule from weeks 13 and 14 and apply to ai and ay:
Remember that when 2 vowels go walking, the first one does the talking!

    Vowel sorting game: http://www.starfall.com/n/sorting/two-vowels/load.htm?f

    ay game: http://www.roythezebra.com/reading-games/long-vowel-phonemes-ay.html

Week 16: igh and -y as long i

    igh: high, right, night, sight

y as long i: try, cry, dry, fly, why, by

sight words: why, they, this, by

Now when we read, we should know to try either long i or long e when we see a word that ends in y!  Trying both vowel sounds is one of our reading strategies to help us with accuracy!

    Week 19: ou/au/aw
house, mouse, shout, about, August, because, hawk, paw, draw, saw, were, who
Last week we learned that -ow can make the sound like you hurt yourself- Ow!  So can -ou... ouch!  Ou likes to be at the beginning or middle of a word/syllable, while ow likes to be at the end of a word or syllable.  For some reason, -ow also likes to be before just -n or lust -l like grown or growl.  Don't ask us why!
