Program Delivers Sobering Message
HOBART: Hobart High School students made jokes Wednesday as they watched their peers test their coordination while wearing Fatal Vision "drunk goggles" but Hobart police hoped the experience meant more to the students than a few laughs.
The Hobart Police Drug Abuse Resistance Education program offered the activity to increase student awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, DARE Officer Jack Grennes said. The program was geared toward students attending Friday's Prom.
Students drove golf carts through an obstacle course and took part in field sobriety tests while wearing the goggles, which simulate the effects of having a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.17. The legal limit is 0.08.
"This is as close to the real thing as we can get," said Grennes.
The obstacle course was marked off with several orange cones, which many students such as Steve Saims knocked over while driving the golf carts.
"I was seeing double," Saims said.
He said it was difficult driving the cart while wearing the goggles, and at one point, he thought he was driving on a hill even though the ground was flat.
Students also tried throwing and kicking a ball wearing the goggles. They normally threw the ball off target and sometimes missed the ball completely when they tried to kick it.
Senior Jervony Bradley said the experience was an effective way for students to realize the possible outcome if someone drives while intoxicated.
"You'll suffer a lot of consequences," Bradley said.
